Protecting Your Appliances During Arizona Monsoon Season

Arizona monsoon season brings dramatic weather changes that can stress and damage household appliances. From July through September, powerful storms deliver lightning, power surges, and sudden humidity spikes that create unique challenges.

Power surges during monsoon storms are the greatest threat. A single lightning strike near your home can send voltage spikes through your electrical system, damaging sensitive electronic controls in modern appliances. Sub-Zero refrigerators, Wolf ranges, and other luxury appliances contain sophisticated control boards particularly vulnerable to surge damage.

Install whole-house surge protection. While individual surge protectors help, a whole-house unit installed at your electrical panel provides the best defense. This protects all appliances, including those with hardwired connections that cannot use plug-in surge protectors.

Humidity spikes during monsoon storms can affect appliance performance unexpectedly. Gas range igniters may click repeatedly or fail to light when humidity rises suddenly. Refrigerators may form condensation internally. These issues typically resolve as humidity normalizes, but persistent problems warrant professional inspection.

If you lose power during a storm, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. A full freezer maintains safe temperatures for approximately 48 hours; a refrigerator for about 4 hours. Resist the urge to check contents repeatedly, as this releases cold air.

After power restoration, allow appliances a few minutes before expecting normal operation. Some units have protective delays built into their controls. If an appliance does not restart automatically, check your circuit breakers before calling for service.

Document any storm-related damage for insurance purposes. Take photos and note the date, time, and weather conditions. Many homeowner policies cover surge damage, but documentation strengthens claims.
