A non-functioning ice maker frustrates homeowners, especially during Arizona summers when ice demand peaks. Before calling for service, work through these troubleshooting steps that resolve many common issues.

First, verify the ice maker is actually turned on. This seems obvious, but the control arm or switch sometimes gets inadvertently moved. Locate your unit's ice maker switch and confirm it is in the on position.

Check the water supply line. Ensure the valve under the sink or behind the refrigerator is fully open. A kinked supply line can restrict water flow without completely stopping it, causing intermittent ice production issues.

Examine the freezer temperature. Ice makers require temperatures between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If your freezer is too warm, ice production slows or stops. Check the thermostat setting and verify it is reaching the correct temperature with a freezer thermometer.

Inspect the water inlet valve. If you hear a buzzing sound when the ice maker tries to fill, the inlet valve may be failing. This valve requires correct water pressure to operate. Low household water pressure can prevent filling.

Clear any ice jams in the mechanism. Sometimes ice cubes fuse together or an oddly-shaped cube jams the ejector arm. Carefully remove any obstructions, but avoid using sharp objects that could damage the mechanism.

Arizona's hard water causes mineral buildup in the water inlet screen. If other troubleshooting fails, this screen may need cleaning. Turn off water supply, disconnect the line, and clean the screen with vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits.

If these steps do not restore ice production, the issue likely involves the ice maker module, thermostat, or control board. These components require professional diagnosis and repair.
